After an English Literature and Film BA from the University of Sheffield in 2005, Alexei worked in production on ‘Infinite Justice’ directed by Jamil Dehlavi, starring Raza Jeffrey and some NFTS shorts including director Yann Demange`s ‘Incomplete’. In 2006 Alexei joined (George Harrison`s) HandMade Films working on films including ‘Cracks’ (Eva Green), ‘Fifty Dead Men Walking’ (Ben Kingsley) and ‘Planet 51’ (Ilion Studios/Sony Pictures). In 2011 he set up Turn The Slate Productions with producer Jessica Turner and wrote and co-produced the company`s first short film ‘82’ directed by the award winning Calum Macdiarmid. It starred Lock Stock`s Nick Moran as a mischievous postman and collected 15 awards and screened in over 50 festivals including Raindance, London Shorts Film Festival, Florida and Dresden – for which the British Council supported Alexei’s attendance. Alexei’s second short as writer/producer ‘Scarlet Says’ starring Alexandra Gilbreath (Monarch of the Glen) and Emma Amos (Vera Drake) premiered at the BAFTA qualifying London Short Film Festival in Jan 2015 and was selected for 19 further festivals. Alexei then produced ‘The Driving Seat’ by writer/director Phil Lowe starring Olivier award winning actress Janie Dee which screened at London Short Film Festival and Aesthetica Film Festival (both BAFTA qualifying festivals) and the OSCAR qualifying Cleveland Intl. Film Festival and won several awards including the Audience 'Hitchcock' Award at the prestigious Dinard British Film Festival in France. To date it has been selected for and/or invited to 40 film festivals. Alexei wrote and directed short date comedy ‘Ewww’ starring Nick Read and Harrie Hayes from rising comedy group ‘Zazu’ which is currently screening at film festivals and was recently selected for the BAFTA affiliated Aesthetica Short Film Festival; Alexei`s 3rd film to screen in York before picking up Best Comedy at Crystal Palace Intl. Film Festival, 2017. He then wrote and exec produced the short, ‘Candice’ directed by George Watson and starring Olivia Poulet (The Thick Of It) and Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) who was also an executive producer and the film debuts at TriForce Film Festival at BAFTA in December 2017. Alexei also wrote and directed the short comedy drama ‘Call Me Alvy’ starring Tracy Ann Oberman (Toast of London) and Kevin Eldon (Big Train) about a Woody Allen obsessed Bar Mitzvah boy which was invited to screen for the first time at the 21st UK Jewish Film Festival. Also recently completed is a short surreal comedy ‘Great Dane’ written by Alexei, directed by James Webber and starring Tom Machell and Maddie Rice also from comedy group, ‘Zazu’ which debuted at Crystal Palace Intl. Film Festival also. Having been at HandMade Films for over 7 years, Alexei worked as Head of Development up until early 2014 before becoming Head of Film at start up production company Laughing Gravy Media where he worked until 2016. Alexei regularly works on the script pitch event at the London Screenwriters Festival and has sat on several panels for Raindance. Alexei has a number of projects in development as writer and producer. Alexei has been selected for the BFI NETWORK x BAFTA Crew 2017, an enhanced version of the popular professional development programme and recently joined Little Dot Studios to help set up its new short film channel, Tall Tales.
